Is IC BPS part of a central sensitivity syndrome?

While it's commonly understood that a IC/BPS is probably a syndrome of conditions. Think about it. Why do some patients have Hunner's ulcers and others don't. Why do some patients have vulvodynia or IBS while others don't. Why do some patients just have frequency while others have pain? We're still trying to figure it out.. but one piece of the puzzle for SOME patients is what this study is talking about... "central sensitivity syndrome." I think that this explains why so many IC patients have other related conditions like IBS, vulvodynia, etc. I do think this is at the root of my personal health struggles. I am the sensitivity queen.. GRRRR!!! - Jill

Intravesical hyaluronic acid study for interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome in France Shows Success

Intravesical hyaluronic acid, aka cystistat in Canada, is nothing new to the IC world. It's been available for years though it is not FDA approved in the USA for the treatment of IC due to fairly poor clinical trials. In this study, however, researchers in France report that they have seen an approx. 52% response rate in IC patients. Not bad actually! - Jill O.

IC Nerd Alert! Here's another interesting study by Susan Keay, the reearcher who discovered the APF factor in the urine of IC patients. She and her colleagues have determined that they can inhibit the effect of apf by using an apf antagonist. Interesting stuff. Doncha just love science! - Jill

AUA Releases New Guidelines For IC/BPS

The long awaited new clinical guidelines for the treatment of interstitial cystitis (aka bladder pain syndrome) were released by the American Urology Association (AUA) this month, offering what may be the most comprehensive clinical care article written to date in the USA. Solidly written, it offers new insight into diagnostic testing as well as a new, six stage IC treatment algorithm that can be used by physicians and patients as you consider your treatment and pain management plans.

Please help us share this vital new resource by printing both this summary and the guidelines out to share with all of your medical care providers.
