Synopsis: As we first shared last February, the patent for Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) expired January 19, 2010 raising a variety of concerns. Having a patent expire means that the drug is now available for manufacturing as a generic medication. For patients, this can be a very good thing because generics are usually much less inexpensive than the brand name medication.

As Elmiron users in the US can attest, it can cost hundreds of dollars a month if you lack drug prescription coverage. To have that monthly fee reduced to, say $25 per month, would be outstanding. Of course, the challenge is profitability. Elmiron is only FDA approved oral drug for the treatment of interstitial cystitis thus it doesn't have a large market share. Will another pharmaceutical company step in and try to capture the market? At this point, we're not aware of any companies who are considering making Elmiron in a generic form. But, we hope so.
We are certainly grateful to Ortho McNeil and its predecessors ALZA and IVAX, who have played a critical role in the education of physicians about interstitial cystitis diagnosis and treatments. We would not be where we are today in terms of public awareness without their tireless PR efforts and sponsorship of various IC events. That said, having the medication be more affordable means that more patients may be able to try it.
Earlier this Fall, the ICN wrote about a dozen letters to various Senators and Representatives urging that the patent for Elmiron be extended. I will be honest in saying that I was torn. I like the idea of a cheaper, more affordable version. In the long run, I think patients will benefit from a generic version But, I chose to support a patent extension simply because I was fearful that no other pharmaceutical companies would step forward. The last thing I want to see is Elmiron disappearing from the market. It appears, though, that those patent extension efforts have failed. We'll let you know if we hear otherwise.
I was thrilled to see the ICA announcement that Ortho McNeil will continue to manufacture Elmiron after the patent expires. This is great news!
So, whether you are for or against brand names vs. generics, time marches on and a New Year brings new developments and opportunities. Your thoughts??

Elmiron is currenty on an unknown backorder. My son is a college student and suffers with this condition. At times the pain doubles him over. Now with this prescription being on backorder it makes me wonder if there is some reason to fear him taking it.

I have been taking Elmiron for the past seven years. I have such a severe case of IC that my doctor wants me to take two capsules three times a day. Who can afford that? My prescription benefit runs out in the first four months of the year. I am forced to take two caps a day. If anyone has tried something different that can help I would like to know.

I will tell everyone that Ortho McNeil does offer a program that you can get a drastically reduced price or even free dosages of Elmiron depending on your income status . I was told by them most drug companies offer the same . Go to their website and get the contact number , it even will prompt you to the assistance line . Good luck to everyone who suffers from this daily hell as do I.

I'm so glad to find this online support group and info site. I'm on Elmiron and Humana pays the majority of it, but it still costs me $230 for 3 months of only 2 pills a day. After reading the comments about Cystoprotek, I think I will try it and see if it works for me.
Here's a huge AHA for me--I'm nearly symptom-free due to reading on the forum that a couple of ladies found that filtered water is acidic. I moved about a year ago to a house sort of out in the country and it has well water. I was filtering the water and it seems my symptoms have been worse. After reading the comments about filtered/bottled water I immediately went to Walmart and bought Aquafina, which is the second best brand as far as acidity. (7.0). Hardly any pain now. I'm so thankful for this site and hope this helps many more sufferers. This one factor, plus using a tsp. of baking soda in a cup of water are the best tips available.

Thanks to everyone for the tip on Cystoprotek. I hadn't heard of it before. I was just diagnosed with IC in June 2011 and have been taking Elmiron. It is really expensive! It seemed to help me after the first couple of months, but recently I have been flaring up all the time. I am trying to figure out what in my diet is aggravating my bladder but in the meantime I will get some Cystoprotek and try that.

I was treated for urethral stricture for almost 20 years before being diagnosed with interstitial cystitis. I am talking three medications Elmiron, Hydroxyzine, Amitriptyline and was informed to never stop taking these three medications. If I did quit taking them, they would not work the second time. I am almost symptom free and have been for about 8 years. My sister has the same condition, stopped taking Elmiron because of the costs and the flares returned. The Elmiron does not help her now and she suffer with interstitial cystitis. If you are having problems, ask your doctor to prescribe these three meds. At first I took Elmiron three times a day and am now down to 1 at bedtime. The Hydroxizine I take 1 in the morning and the Amitriptyline I take with the Elmiron at bedtime on an empty stomach. The only artificial sweetner I use is Splenda as I was told the other brands may cause this condition.
