IC Optimist - Winter 2010 BY MAIL
In this issue of the IC Optimist:

(1) ICN Editorial - It's Time To Prosecute
If you’re looking for a villain, look no farther than Dr. Scott Reuben, a doctor who recently pled guilty to falsifying research data for the drugs Vioxx, Bextra and Celebrex that were pulled from the market a few years ago for triggering strokes and heart attacks. In our editorial, we also explore the role that patients can play in creating a good vs. questionable research study.

(2) The Latest IC Research
Winter is traditionally the time when few research studies are released, however, we do have some good ones to share including new, compelling evidence that anthistamines may help reduce bladder symptoms. Chondroitin sulfate may help restore function in the bladder wall. Botox continues to look promising. We were particularly interested in one study that showed that men with chronic testicular pain may actually be suffering from pelvic floor dysfunction.

(3) Feature Story: It's A Girl - She's Having A Baby Part 3
Stacey Shannon, ICN Writer Extraordinaire, offers the third and final piece to her “She’s Having A Baby “ article series, sharing the profoundly touching birth story of her lovely daughter. She’s very blunt, sharing her struggles and worries with labor, delivery and being a new mother. We’re so happy for her!

(4) Is The IC Diet Making You Angry?
Julie Beyer RD has written a wonderful new article on the often frustrating struggle we each have with the IC diet.

(5) Can A Medication Trigger an IC Flare?
Molly Glidden has written a helpful article about how some medications, including ones that you've taken, can suddenly trigger an IC flare. She shares some very useful tips about medication alternatives as well as introduces the option of using a compounding pharmacy to make preservative free options.

(6) An IC Disaster Kit
With a modest earthquake in Northern California and utter tragedy in Haiti, we are reminded that mother nature can be unpredictable and violent. Thus, I ask you, have you created a home disaster kit for your family?? Have you considered what you might need to help care for your IC? I’ve shared the contents of my home disaster kit which, living in Northern California’s earthquake country, is vital.

(7) IC Friendly Ezekiel Bread
If you're struggling to find an IC and IBS friendly bread, look no further than the frozen food aisle of your local Whole Foods or Organic bakery. This preservative free and kosher bread is a perfect solution for most patients.

(8) Book Review of Ending Female Pain
We have a wonderful new resource to share. Ending Female Pain – A Woman’s Manual by Isa Herrera PT is a practical, easy to read book that can help patients who are struggling with PFD and pelvic pain. Got a mirror?? You’ll use it after you read the book!

(9) Hot Drinks to Warm Your Spirits
We also offer several of the recipes submitted in our Holiday Hot Drink Beverage contest that will give you many new, more IC friendly hot drinks to enjoy during the Winter! Check out the winning recipe “White Chocolate Vanilla Bean “Cocoa” with Cinnamon Whipped Cream. You’ll love it!
