IC Optimist - Winter 2009 By Email
In this edition:

(1) ICN Editorial - "Why Isn't IC Being Covered in Medical School" - Our gratitude to medical student Mathew Hazard who wrote a blistering editorial on IC for the Winter 2008 International Journal of Clinical Practice which openly wonders "why" IC is barely covered in medical school. Is it the lingering legacy that IC could be a mental or emotional disorder? Possibly! Is it just a clear denial that bladder diseases deserve time and recognition? Likely. We cover this issue indepth and ask patients to get involved in changing this dire situation.

(2) Our feature story, “Surviving IC Catastrophes,” covers several events that IC patients often worry about such as finding a restroom, what to do when your doctor moves away (or dies), when you run out of medicines at awkward times, and when you’re confronted with a meal where there’s no IC friendly foods. Rather than having you worry unnecessarily, we’ve included some great suggestions from other patients.

(3) The Latest IC Research covers several new, promising articles and studies including the new Japanese guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of IC, the cost of IC to younger patients, diagnostic methods for IC, a new OAB treatment in gel form and intravesical chondroitin as a treatment.

(4) Are probiotics a fake fad? Not according to this latest study which has found that probiotics can indeed treat a variety of conditiosn, including diarrhea resulting from antibiotic use. But, it's also been found to help reduce the incidence of bladder infections. An Introduction to Probiotics covers all the basics, explaining where probiotics come from, what science says, potential side effects and risks.

(5) Got Snow?? IC Friendly Winter Sports ICN member Yvette has contributed a great article that we hope will encourage you to get out and enjoy your winter sports. Between snow shoeing, ice skating and skiing, you can find IC friendly activities to enjoy!

(6) Author Bev Laumann has contributed a great IC diet column sharing an IC Friendly Winter Dinner and a great recipe for Nutmeg-Rubbed Roast Beef and Orange Almond Yams.

(7) Got Milk? What's the ultimate IC friendly drink?? Milk! This article offers some great hot and cold beverage ideas using milk.

(8) Our Self-Help Tip of the Month shares some great affirmations that you can use to lift your spirits and ease your worries during this crazy, economic time.

(9) Stacey Shannon offers a comprehensive new article, Q-Urol: The Next Generation Supplement, describing a new time released quercetin supplement released by Farr Laboratories. She also offers a wide variety of tips that can help you select a reliable and high quality supplement.
