IC Optimist - Summer/Fall 2010 Edition BY EMAIL
IC Optimist - Summer/Fall 2010 Edition BY EMAIL
In this issue:

(1) ICN Editorial: Is it time to consider medicinal marijuana? ICN President Jill Osborne asks the question "If research can take the components of marijuana that help patients 'get high' and keep the components that fight pain, wouldn't that be a credible use of MJ?" New research explores marijuanas proven pain fighting abilities and IC patients reveal, for the first time, how it has helped (or hurt) them.

(2) Medicinal Marijuana and the Bladder - A new bladder instillation? - ICN writer Stacey Shannon explores new research that has found cannabinoid receptors in the bladder and how that may lead to a new bladder instillation.

(3) Inside AUA 2010 - The Latest IC Research Studies - This year was a glorious watershed for IC news and announcements during the annual AUA Conference with new American guidelines released for IC, new promising therapies and much more.

(4) Consumer Alert: Colloidal Silver - Consumer Reports has named colloidal silver one of the 12 most dangerous supplements on the market today. Ironically, it was very popular in IC alternative circles years ago but this new report discourages its use for clear and potentially life threatening side effects.

(5) More Interesting Research News - Who would have thought that Vitamin D would be critically important for patients struggling with pelvic floor disorders. New research has determined that patients with low Vitamin D levels were much more likely to develop PF problems. Researchers Nickel and Shoskes released a study finding no correlation between bacteria and IC flares.

(6) Wine, Beer & Spirits - Do They Trigger IC Flares? - The results of the ICN Alcohol and IC survey were fascinating. Supporting patient reports for years, straight alcohols were found to be less irritating than some beers, wine and mixed drinks. There was, however, significant variation in the types of alcohols consumed.

(7) Tierney's Teen Journey Living with IC - Can you imagine developing IC at the age of 12? Tierney Nadeau did and she shares the struggles that she faced not only in getting a clear diagnosis but also in attending school. Can you imagine a school punishing patients for needing to use the restroom?

(8) Fighting Flares With Fun - More and more IC patients have found that playing on-line games distracts them from their pain and discomfort.

(9) Summer Drink Contest - The results are in and we share many of the recipes submitted in this summers cold drink contest. If you're looking for more drinks to enjoy that are IC friendly, you must try some of these recipes.

(10) Self-help Tip of the Month: Oh, The Fickle Bowel - IC and IBS - ICN President Jill Osborne offers insight into IC and IBS, particularly the concept of foods that trigger sensitivity reactions. She's not allergic to chocolate or oatmeal, but they sure trigger bowel discomfort for her.
