IC Optimist - Summer 2009 Edition
IC Optimist - Summer 2009 Edition
In this issue of the IC Optimist:

(1) Back To School Strategies For Students With IC
With school beginning shortly, we've offered a comprehensive article that can help both students and parents advocate for their needs, particularly with respect for restroom access. It's a sad fact that most restrooms are now locked in schools around the country and some patients are punished for asking to use the restroom. Our goal is to maintain the pride, dignity and self respect of students who have IC. In this article, we offer suggestions for parents of elementary students with IC.. including how to work with the school office, the teacher and after school programs. High school students have different, equally important needs. We also offer comments on making bus rides more IC friendly, IC friendly lunches and snacks, handling absences and home teacher options. We're very proud of this article and hope that it helps.

(2) Ketamine Bladder Syndrome
When Shereen held her first IC support group meeting in Malaysia earlier this summer, she was stunned to find the room filled with young, teenage ketamine addicts. She's on the front line of a new emerging problem around the world. Ketamine, it turns out, is highly destructive to the bladder, creating a Hunner's Ulcers, frequency, urgency and the typical symptoms of IC. It's vital that we raise awareness and prevent these teens from developing life long bladder symptoms.

(3) AUA 2009 Report
ICN Writer Stacey Shannon contributes a great article on the research highlights presented at this Springs AUA 2009 meeting, as well as summaries of the two courses on IC taught to physicians from around the world. This is proof that the IC research movement is alive, well and kicking!

(4) She's Having a Baby - Part 2
Stacey continues her journal of her first pregnancy with IC, discussing progress she's made during the second trimester and how IC has, and has not, impacted her. She also learns the sex of the baby!

(5) Five Ways To Calm Vaginal Burning
Susan Bilheimer, author of the new book Secret Suffering, contributes a fabulous self help feature for those patients struggling with vaginal or vulvar symptoms.

(6) Self-Help Tip of the Month - Is Tap Water Better Than Filtered Water
ICN Member Beth shares her discovery that the fancy, expensive filtering system that she bought actually made her water more acidic and bladder irritating. It turns out that, for her, regular tap water was the most IC friendly of all!

(7) From Anger to Gratitude: In Search of Emotional Well-Being
Author Molly Glidden offers insight into handling the emotional swings that often come with a diagnosis of a chronic disease, including IC. From fear to uncertainty, anger to isolation, she shares some thoughts on how you can move to gratitude and joy in your daily life.

(8) Steak Barbecues and Marinades
Author Beverley Laumann shares some IC friendly barbecuing recipes. If you miss your steak, you'll find these recipes tantalizing and enjoyable.
