IC Optimist - Summer 2006 Edition by EMAIL
In this issue:

#1 - Understanding Irritable Bowel Syndrome and IC- Got IBS? Well, if you’re like most IC patients, you probably do struggle with periods of constipation, cramping, gas and/or diarrhea. Irritable bowel syndrome is a related condition to IC thought we’re still not sure why. What we do know is that the physiology and management of IBS is quite similar to IC and I’m sure you’ll find many more similarities after reading the transcript of a lecture provided by Heather Van Vorous, author of First Year IBS and Eating for IBS.

#2- Inside AUA 2006 - The Latest IC Research Studies
Stacey Shannon’s report from the annual meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) highlights several new areas of study including the first research study that proves that food can trigger IC symptoms, the use of hyperbaric oxygen as a treatment for IC, sexuality and the medical costs of IC. One study that comes as no surprise determined that women with IC had significantly more pelvic surgeries, particularly hysterectomies.

#3 - Childhood Abuse and PFD
Stacey also covers a very delicate subject, sexual abuse and interstitial cystitis. Recent research by Ken Peters MD (Royal Oak, MI) found that over 36.9% of patients in his study reported a history of physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse during childhood as compared to 22.4% in the general population.

#4 - Are You A Teacher With IC? In “ A Teacher Speaks Out,” IC patient and teacher Kadi offers great suggestions for other educators struggling with career demands in the classroom.

#5 - IC In the News The Latest IC news from journals, corporations and more!

#6 - Tomato Tricks Bev Laumann shares four great recipes where you can enjoy tomato dishes but without the excess acid. Check out the pasta sauce recipes!

#7 - Clinical Trial Announcements Two new clinical trials are announced in the USA and Canada.
