  IC Optimist - Fall 2011
IC Optimist - Fall 2011
In this issue:

(1) ICN Editorial - Some Very Good News - The ICN received a fabulous honor from researchers at Harvard University this September!

(2) Why Did a Patient Die Hours After InterStim® Surgery? - Numerous articles in the past few years criticize the FDA's oversight of medical device approvals and adverse events. Patients in the IC community may be surprised to learn that InterStim has hundreds of filed adverse events, including 22 fatality reports many of which are unexplained. ICN President Jill Osborne shares many of these adverse event reports including a subset of patients experiencing heart symptoms and heart attack. There are far too many questions left unanswered about the adverse events experienced with this device and we suggest that an independent review panel be formed. Patients deserve to know all the potential risks before embarking on this potentially life changing surgery.

(3) The Latest IC Research - Four new studies were released including a new treatment combination and yet another positive study using liposomes. Does IC present differently depending upon your age? It appears that it does!

(4) Holiday Cheer On A Shoestring - Facing the holidays on a limited or non-existant budget? In this stuttering economy, Stacey Shannon offers a fabulous article sharing how patients are saving money yet can still enjoy a lovely holiday season filled with joyful memories and heartfelt gifts.

(5) New IC Cookbook Released - Just in time for the holidays, author Mia Eliot has released her second cookbook "The Happy Bladder Christmas Cookbook" filled with dozens of delightful recipes for cookies, cakes, candies, pies, puddings and pastries!

(6) Do You Hate Having a Chronic Illness - Chronic Illness Coach Tom Robinson contributes an article that confronts the self-hatred that we often struggle with when living with a chronic illness. He reminds us that we deserve compassion and caring and that it must begin with ourselves.

(7) Consumer Alerts - Prosed DS is apparently no longer being manufactured leaving patients struggling to find an option. Uribel may be a reasonable alternative. Celexa, an antidepressant, can cause heart complications.

(8) A Patient's Story - Shelia Ricks shares her experience in applying for and receiving disability benefits and offers tips and strategies that can help.

(9) A Patient's Story - Nicole McDonald shares how her struggle with IC has made her stronger, more compassionate and thankful. In the darkness of illness, light can be found!

(10) Self-Help Tip - What's the Worst Drink for IC Ever? - IBS activist and author Heather Van Vorous wrote an article about the worst IBS drink ever and we've paid homage to her work and adapted it to IC to share what we believe the worst drink for IC is ever? Pour caffeine, artificial sugar, coffee or tea, vitamins and acid into a bottle and what do you get?

(11)Favorite Holiday Recipes - Who says that you can't enjoy holiday foods while on the IC diet? We fifteen of our favorite recipes for beef, turkey, veggies, salads, cookies and cakes collected from IC patients during the past fifteen years. Angel Food Pie anyone?
