IC Optimist - Fall 2009 Edition
IC Optimist - Fall 2009 Edition
In this issue of the IC Optimist:

(1) ICN Editorial - IC Awareness Activities
October is traditionally the month when IC awareness activities occur yet it simply isn't enough. We need a year round effort to reach those patients who are suffering in silence at home alone and to educate more medical care providers about IC treatments and patient care. ICN President Jill Osborne shares seven things that you can do AT HOME to help the cause.

(2) The 2009 IC/PBS Food Guide
After six months of work by a collaborative team of registered dietitians, the authors of the various IC diet books and representatives from the ICA and ICN, we are pleased to release a new, updated and greatly expanded list of foods that are bladder friendly, foods that are worth trying and foods that are most reported to irritate the bladder. Diet is vital to the success of most patients and by avoiding those foods which irritate our tender bladder tissues, many IC flares can be averted. This is a must have for all IC patients who are food sensitive.

(3) Nurse Practitioners Tackle IC
You'll find more and more clinics emerging around the country that are run by nurse practitioners. Case in point, the Women's Center for Gynecology and Bladder Disorders in Louisville, Kentucky. Nurse practitioners Melinda Staten and Jan Eklund share how they work with IC and pelvic pain patients. They prove, yet again, that nurses are an IC patients life line, available not only for long term therapy but also in an urgent flare. Thank you ladies for being there for so many patients in your community.

(4) IC and Military Health Care
April Chen, the wife of an Air Force Captain, shares her experience with the military health care system and provides suggestions for other patients who might be finding it difficult to navigate this complex yet surprisingly compassionate care system. Thank you April for sharing your story.

(5) The Latest IC Research
Research released this summer shows promising new therapies, including the use of liposomes to treat IC and a pollen extract, cernilton.

(6) International Continence Society Conference Report
Read our review of the Fall 2009 meeting of the ICS, including a veritable bounty of new IC research studies, including three effective treatments for the often difficult to treat Hunner's Ulcers.

(7) Self-Help Tip of the Month - How To Avoid Unncessary Surgeries
It's tragic and sadly true that some IC patients have had completely unnecessary hysterectomies and appendectomies because their doctors weren't aware that they had IC or simply did not believe that IC was real. ICN President Jill Osborne shares those stories and offers suggestions on how to work with your doctor and be a proactive patient if you surgery is suggested to you.

(8) Fresh Tastes by Bev - Breads of Life
IC patients often struggle to eat breads that are high in preservatives and/or flavorings. The great news is that the most IC friendly breads are often made by local bakeries or in your own bread maker. Bev Laumann offers a comprehensive article on how you can enjoy fresh, flavorful breads despite your IC diet restrictions. She also offers a great recipe for a potato bread!
