IC Optimist - Fall 08 Edition
IC Optimist - Fall 08 Edition
The IC Optimist is your source for the latest IC news and practical self-help strategies. This expanded issue of the Fall 2008 IC Optimist includes:

(1) IC Awareness Week 2008 – ICN Editorial
This fall, the first ever IC Awareness week was launched by the NPWH, ICN and Ortho Women’s Health and Urology. In addition to a groundbreaking internet campaign that utilized Facebook, MySpace and, of course, the ICN, a brand new documentary on IC was released to PBS stations around the country.

(2) A New Approach to IC and Prostatitis – Feature Story
We’ve long known that IC patients often present with dramatically different symptoms and physical findings. Some may have just frequency urgency, while others have pain. Some may have Hunner’s Ulcers while others have no visible bladder damage. Thus, beggin the question, is IC really one condition. The answer, clearly, is probably not. Four researchers released a groundbreaking new proposal which divides IC and prostatitis into six phenotypes or subsets that will help doctors diagnose patients more quickly and create more customized treatment plans. If you suffer from a confusing array of medical conditions and subsets, prepare to have your experience validated in this article.

(3) How The Bowel Can Trigger Bladder Pain
We always knew that foods can irritate the bladder thus resulting in the well known IC diet recommendations. Known as the Pepperoni Pizza Hypothesis, Northwestern University has provided research which demonstrates foods which irritate the bowel result in simultaneous bladder irritation thus suggesting some possible new treatment options. Granted, pepperoni pizza isn’t on the IC diet list anyway, but it’s not surprising that the nerves in the bowel and bladder are so closely related.

(5) Holiday Foods and Parties
Bev Laumann shares her tips and strategies on how to not only attend but also enjoy holiday parties even when the foods and drinks might not be IC friendly! She includes a great recipe for peppermint ice cream.

(6) Is Your Car IC Friendly
When 50% of IC patients report that driving in a car is uncomfortable, finding a car that won’t jiggle our bladders and make it worse is vital. This article shares the results of a summer long survey from patients regarding their smaller, fuel efficient cars. Surprisingly, the Toyota Prius received poor review for comfort. If you’re looking for a comfortable ride, this is a good place to begin.

(7) Book Review: Confident Choices: A Cookbook for IC and OAB
Julie Beyer’s latest book, “Confident Choices: A Cookbook for IC and Overactive bladder” will be a lovely addition to IC libraries around the world. A perfect complement to her first book “Confident Choices: Customizing the IC Diet,” Julie uses this new publication to walk the novice patient through essential IC diet basics and she does it in a style that is simple, easy to understand and inherently practical.

(8) Book Review Heal Pelvic Pain
Heal Pelvic Pain: The Proven Stretching, Strengthening and Nutrition Program for Relieving Pain, Incontinence, I.B.S. and other Symptoms without Surgery offers readers relief and recovery for pelvic floor disorders through a program of strengthening, stretching and relaxation exercises, massage techniques, nutritional basics, and self-care therapies—without drugs or surgery.
